A Course in Miracles states, "⁶Awareness of dreaming is the real function of God's teachers."
(M-12.6:6)
When you hear sounds, you know you hear dream sounds as they echo a hollow unreality, for example, a car driving, the neighbor's voice, a bird's call, or a clap of thunder.
Then you may look at someone in the next moment, and what you perceive is a dream figure. It's hard to explain; you just have this particular awareness that the image in front of you is a figure in a dream.
In my early thirties, I was hospitalized for an autoimmune disease. What was the most terrorizing wasn't what I was going through; it was the man in the bed next to me who cried out in pain each night.
His suffering haunted me for years, his crying out in sheer agony and helplessness. It was paralyzing.
Years later, while with the Holy Spirit, this painful memory bubbled up to the surface. I was transported back in time to the hospital, and I heard the man call out in pain again, but this time it was experienced as a dream sound coming from a dream figure.
His cry reverberated around the hospital walls, but it didn't bring up the paralyzing terror in my mind as previously because now I was aware of dreaming.
Furthermore, it was shown that there was no dream figure in a bed calling out in agony. This is the Atonement Principle, which gives you the certainty that the separation did not occur.
This Miracle immediately erased the memory, undoing the terror in my mind.
To quote from the Course:
God's teachers,
"... watch the dream figures come and go, shift and change, suffer and die. ⁸Yet they are not deceived by what they see.
⁹They recognize that to behold a dream figure as sick and separate is no more real than to regard it as healthy and beautiful.
¹⁰Unity alone is not a thing of dreams.
¹¹And it is this God's teachers acknowledge as behind the dream, beyond all seeming and yet surely theirs."
(M-12.6:6-11)
Yet alongside this, A Course in Miracles shares that our path to God is set straight and clear. Jesus firmly states that the way to God is directly through knowing your brother.
Although we may sometimes want to pull away from our brothers when we perceive their pain as too unbearable, we must move closer with the guidance of the Holy Spirit shining in our minds.
Here are two compelling paragraphs that state this with such clarity that we can not reach God alone.
"I will go with you to the Holy One, and through my perception He can bridge the little gap.
²Your gratitude to your brother is the only gift I want. ³I will bring it to God for you, knowing that to know your brother _is_ to know God.
⁴If you are grateful to your brother, you are grateful to God for what He created.
⁵Through your gratitude you come to know your brother, and one moment of real recognition makes everyone your brother because each of them is of your Father.
As you come closer to a brother you approach me, and as you withdraw from him I become distant to you.
²Salvation is a collaborative venture. ³It cannot be undertaken successfully by those who disengage themselves from the Sonship, because they are disengaging themselves from me.
⁴God will come to you only as you will give Him to your brothers.
⁵Learn first of them and you will be ready to hear God.
⁶That is because the function of love is one."
(T-4.VI.7:1–8:6)
